Ciao Ciao Newsletter - Summer Term – Week 1

Dear Parents,

Summer Term – Week 1

This week’s topic was Spring and Butterflies. Eight small caterpillars arrived at school, and the children have been very excited to observe them. Over the coming days and weeks, they will have the opportunity to watch the caterpillars grow, form a chrysalis, and eventually become butterflies. Throughout the week, we discussed the butterfly life cycle and spent time closely observing the caterpillars.

In Art, the children created beautiful butterflies using painted paper plates, as well as some fun and creative caterpillar crafts.

Vocabulary Focus

This week, we introduced and explored the following words:

summer, butterfly, caterpillar, chrysalis, flowers, bee, pollen, tulips, sun, and more.

Group Time Highlights

During group time, we:

* Danced to a butterfly-themed song.

* Practised counting in Maths by exploring how many fruits the caterpillar eats in the story.

* Introduced the letter F in Phonics (for fly).

* Read the stories “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and “Springtime”.

* Began practising some new songs together.

Montessori Activity

In the Montessori tray, the children explored a Very Hungry Caterpillar activity. Using a line of fruits as a base, they selected and arranged food items to create the caterpillar’s “belly,” supporting both fine motor skills and sequencing.

A Quick Look at Our Week

Monday:

School was closed for INSET day.

Tuesday:

Cooking was cancelled due to induction day.

Wednesday:

At Forest School, plants arrived from Myatts Field Park. The children enjoyed planting them in our garden.

Thursday:

During Computer Science time, the children practised using the mouse through a maths activity, helping to develop hand-eye coordination and early numeracy skills.

Friday (Drama & Music):

In Drama, the children participated in a movement activity using classical music. While listening, they made a ball “dance” by copying the teacher’s movements. This activity supported their coordination, focus, and cognitive development.
